Who is This Mystery Man? Yet Another Reston Graffiti Whodunit

mystery man.JPG

Sometimes graffiti is unambiguously and disturbingly clear in its messages to its intended audience. However, following a recent baffling installation at the Home Depot playground, we've been seeing variations of this poster in locations all over Reston. These particular specimens were defacing a piece of much earlier -- and officially sanctioned -- public art, quite possibly called Oblong Concrete Pointy Thing, at the Lake Anne underpass. Other posters in other locations have included arcane symbols like $$$ and 6-6-6 (hopefully not a variation of our modest suggestion for a 9-9-9 plan for Reston). Any thoughts on what all this might mean? Whatever it is, it couldn't be more confounding than this blast from the past, the end.

Hmmmn...bears a little bit of a resemblance to the younger J. Edgar Hoover? Except J. Edgar wasn't known for his smile.

  2. Looks a little like Mr. Bean. I have a relatively unrelated question-- did you write about the people living in the tent under Reston Parkway in the tunnel by Barnes and Noble? They were there for at least two days. It was an expensive, name brand tent. So Reston.

  12. So we know WHO the picture is of... but WHY is he plastered all over Reston with various mysterious comments? I doubt Barbisol is planning a comeback via a viral marketing campaign microtargeted at midscale planned community residents.

  15. The ones posted at Lake Anne - which by the way were posted like old style playbills with the entire surface of the 8.5x11 sheet of paper glued firmly to the surface of the concrete--said "666 ways to get paid" which yields this in google: http://666.johnasavoia.com/

  17. I hade heard a rumor it might be gang realted so I contacted FFX county gang prevention coordinator. They say it's not gang related, althought I'm not sure how they would know for sure.

  18. If anyone wants to be helpful, the posters come right off after it rains. A plastic pancake flipper does the trick.
