Our BFFs at Reston Now tell us that the Fairfax County Planning Commission has recommended approval of plans to build two residential high-rises and an office building on the surface parking lot and the site of the existing Ruby Tuesdays FedEx building in Reston Town Center. The project now goes to county supervisors for final approval.
You may recall that along with eliminating a surface parking lot that provides endless opportunities to circle endlessly, waiting for a space to open up, the development--whose three buildings range in height from 17 to 21 stories high--would encroach on the existing park space, and during an initial meeting, the developers admitted that they had added extra trees to a rendering. But they are including a "yoga deck, lawn and public art space."
The planning staff report credits the plan's "coordinated site design, building locations, urban design, open space amenities and parking facilities," all of which ensure "that the two blocks function in a compatible, well-designed and efficient manner." 
Plus, there are plenty of trees. At least virtual ones in this rendering.

If "the two blocks function in a compatible, well-designed and efficient manner", we will soon see lots of new little baby blocks running around.
ReplyDeleteNot only did they put in fake "virtual" trees, they really will take out a number of mature oaks & other trees east of the parking lot for some 60 feet or so.
ReplyDeleteIt's a big FU to Reston, including its already developer-driven master plan. That plan says to protect mature trees and creates a "goal" of 20% of open space. Pardon me, but I don't see anything but concrete & glass.

You forgot to mention those funny (translated "ugly") yellow Triffids that are supposed to be whimsical and thought-provoking and utterly pointless, all at the same time...jeez what tripe.
DeleteThis is the part of the comments section wherein I write a lengthy and thoughtful commentary on the benefits of Reston becoming a town. No doubt I will state that the county has yet again dismissed our feeble protests as the supervisors consummate their marriage to developers..in public, no less. And then I will lament the fact that it's a bit late to get this horse back in the barn. But then I shrug, decide to stop worrying and learn to love the development, and wait to see what's coming next to our little Tysons-West.
ReplyDeleteI will certainly miss the Third World experience (a combination of West Virginia and El Salvador) that is the carnival that they have in that parking lot periodically.
