Flashback Monday: South Reston: The Brochure: The Unnecessary Colon

Reston problems.jpg

See, it's not just this "web log" that overuses colons; it's clearly something in the water. But who wouldn't want to live in a town that "helps its people cope with the problems of living in times like these?" Not overly verbose promotional brochure copywriters, that's for sure!

Years before Star Wars would dazzle audiences, Reston marketers mastered the long expository text scroll.

Here's a lovely charcoal rendering of the Sawyers Townhouses, which featured "electric kitchens" and wall-to-wall carpeting. They were touted as being "conveniently located across the street from the Reston South Golf Course," but we've already ridden that nostalgia train.

Lookit, it's Shadowood Condominiums, touted as being within walking distance of the Pony Barn.

And here's Southgate Condominiums, which according to this drawing were conveniently located near a gaping maw in the earth, from which the Sleestaks would emerge at night the golf course, the end.

  2. What's in a name? that which we call a Gulag by any other name would smell as sweet...

  3. Unnecessary colon? That's what the colorectal surgeon said. Now I am a semicolon.

Perhaps the new, modern eyesore that replaces the golf course will have miniature golf?

  4. Finally, Southgate Condos makes in onto Restonian without being about a peeping tom.

  5. Maybe Shadowood can bulldozed and put a new high-rise instead of the Gulf Course. SouthGate should be next!

As a former city planner myself (though not from the New Town school) I used to applaud the urban renewal-style demolition of cheaply built, outdated housing like this stuff. Only politics and political correctness run amok prevent this from ever happening at this time.

Query: I wonder how many Shadowood and Southgate residents use that "conveniently located" Reston National Golf Course these days?

Why is it that every time I hear about Shadowood the first image that comes to mind is Mirkwood, the creepy, sinister place Tolkien conjured up in "The Hobbit"? The accompanying image above looks like an elven dwelling that's run afoul of whatever design standards existed in Middle Earth.

  8. There are a lot of hard working people living in Shadowood, some of whom have needed a hand up in order to give their kids the same opportunities some of our kids take for granted. There are also some dirtbags. But I have those in my single family dwelling neighborhood as well...and they're white.
