Fanciful Concrete Bollards, Buildings Behind Them, Approved By County

Screen shot 2010-05-11 at 10.06.29 AM.jpgNot surprisingly, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the Comstock Wiehle Metro development during its meeting earlier in the week, so, yay, fanciful concrete bollards for all.

One of our commenters shared this about the future residents of the development:

The residents are to be RA members and the Comstock representatives said it last night in front of the BOS and I have confirmed it with one of the RA board.

Comstock is paying Fairfax County Parks and Rec, Fairfax county for the schools impact. Reston Association will receive a certain amount less than $300K for Parks and Rec. Not enough to make the obvious trail changes on Wiehle that will be required to protect pedestrians from the traffic.
We're not sure about that. After all, 300 large will buy an awful lot of fanciful concrete bollards, and those things are bulletproof.

Update: Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins said this about the proposal:
The Comstock proposal is not a perfect plan but we are unable to go back to the drawing board if we hope to meet deadlines for the coming of rail. This one project can't solve all our transportation problems in the area, but you have my commitment I'll continue pressing for solutions as we move forward.

  1. RA residents = swarming of the adjacent pools...

use the $300K and build them their own pool...

maybe attach a diving board or two to a fanciful bollard...

  2. Sorry for the non-sequitur, but any guesses as to who were those people at the corner of Reston Parkway and Baron Cameron this morning around 8am? There was a non-descript sedan pulled up onto the Home Depot tree lawn and some guy in it staring at the intersection. Even more strange, there was a woman perched on a lawn chair on the Spectrum Center corner, at the top of the grassy hill overlooking the intersection. She was on the phone. Maybe talking to Sedan Man? There was no surveying equipment or other obvious indication of why they were there. They looked settled in for a spell. Can you shed any light on this mystery?

Don't know if that's what these specific people were doing, but I had friends in college who made halfway decent money as temps in the summer counting traffic. Why they couldn't do it by running one of those cables across the intersection is beyond me, but there you go.

  4. Cathy Hudgins' solution to our traffic problems is to have all of us ride our bikes or walk. Have you seen her new wheels?

  5. RE: swarming the pools...most of the Reston pools are too crowded already, except the ones next to Section 8 housing. Go figure. Seriously, the Tall Oaks, Uplands and Shadowood pools are the least used.

It is cheaper to pay someone to count cars than use a mechanical device? Also relying on that person to actually pay attention and count correctly? I guess it's part of TARP for employment issues.

So tell us, what is Cathy driving these days? Something I paid for, no doubt. Is it eco-friendly?

  6. Uplands, least used? That pool is always a madhouse. I live near it, and we usually head elsewhere.

  7. People drive from all over Reston to go to Uplands... one of the reasons I usually avoid it. Whenever I have tried to go it has been completely packed.
