The Gift of the Blarney Stone: Another Open Thread

Or, on St. Patrick's Day, would that be an O'Pen thread? Complain about the quality of the pun, or just have at it, in the comments.

  4. There once was a blog called Restonian
About a "new town" quite utopian
But its people were so mad
    That the politics were bad
    They all considered becoming Estonian

Can anyone give me a true makeover "Reston"-style? Judging from the guys I see in RTC I'm thinking I need someone to let me take them for gourmet eats at Macaroni Grill, someone to donate to me some overpriced button-down shirts (size extra small) from Express Men, someone to teach me how to say "awesome" and "dude" better, someone to teach me to put down people from Herndon, someone to teach me how to act like I'm gay to score chicks yet get pissed off if a dude hits on me, and someone to teach me how to bore everyone talking about my "important" job in Tysons annoyingly loudly while sipping a mixed drink on a Saturday night at Jackson's before I whip out my nearly maxed out credit card while struggling to find a tip-calculating "app" on my iPhone as I fiddle with the keys for my Porsche Boxster that mommy-and-daddy are helping me to pay for (but shhh....nobody's supposed to know that!) 'Tis the life of a typical yuppie Restonian, no? Who needs down-to-earth and personable when you can have "ahead of the curve" and "awesome?"

    Inspired by Le Pigeon's ode:

There was once a duo called Robin and Milt
Who raised our yearly assessment to the hilt
They are assailed as cads, scoundrels, and liars
But as time runs out for the reign of Smyers
Rejoice - the damn rec center never got built!

  8. Bico, you're spending too much time at RTC. There are more interesting places to hang out in Reston, without the hordes of poseurs.

  9. Hey Rod, who writes your flyers for you? They clearly aren't written by you.

  10. I went to address the Rotary along with several other canididates and heard a excellent talk by Dr. Christopher Ogilvie and five things to rejuvenate the body. Among the ones I remember was eat real food as opposed to the increasing manufactured foods that are really killing us, drink filtered water and exercise, Vitamin D, fish oil (smell it even if in a pill if rancid discard) as well as several other things all of which I am doing and am very healthy for it.

I asked him what he had for breakfast and he mentioned a smoothie. I too am having a smoothie which I may put on my blog.

He urged us to stand on each foot for thirty seconds and if possible holding weights aloft. I'm thinking that the kick bike accomplishes this very thing and is fun!

He has a web site and has a office in nearby Herndon.

I may join the Rotary and if you are free for lunch on Wednesdays would think you might enjoy it. They have many worthwhile projects among them a water place in a Jamaican slum.

Nest Wednesday at 12:00 will be none other then Rengin Morrow but not as a candidate but speaking about terrorism.

  11. Hey Rod, thanks for the info on Dr. Rengin Morro. Turns out she teaches at George Mason at...drumroll please...the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. Could there be a better qualification these days to serve on the RA board, except perhaps kindergarten teacher?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hmm. Rengin Morro calls herself an adjunct professor but does not appear on the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution faculty list and has not taught a class there for 2 years.

  13. One thing Dr. Christopher Ogilvie mentioned was the superiority of salt instead of chlorine in pools. it is he said widely used out West. Lila, if you are reading could you look into converting the RCC pool to salt? Possibly we will be able to convert the RA pools to salt? I'd heard also from a different source that chlorine is a problem health wise and am swimming with my head out of the water?

  14. In my campaigning yesterday I meet by phone one man interested innovative planning for Reston. One of his ideas is to link all the lakes in Reston with canals, thus creating more waterfront property. As a enthusiastic canoer I am indeed intrigued by the idea. I would like to have a canal going right by Embers Court! We had quite a rambling conversation encompassing such things the Japanese concepts of landscape design, the Dutch concepts of urban planning. if we could get Dutch urban planners to plan Reston it would be really great. The Dutch essentially recreated their country in the fifties when it was largely flooded and agricultural and by the sixties it was truly wonderful.

  15. TEAM FAIRFAX and beyond...

THIS JUST IN! Barack Obama will be at The Patriot Center at George Mason University THIS FRIDAY March 19 to talk about Healthcare Reform. They are trying to shove this bill through Congress THIS WEEK and we need to let them know that we Americans DO NOT WANT THIS!

I hope that you will be able to join me and the Fairfax County Republican Committee as we protest this Healthcare Bill. We will be meeting at 8:00AM near the main entrance to the Patriot Center! I have coordinated with GMU Campus Police, they have assured me that we will be allowed a location to peacefully demonstrate in the direct vicinity of the Patriot Center, but have asked that we be sure to remain clear of any entrances. There are no tickets or admission cost. Doors will open at 9AM and the event will start at 11:30AM. Our mission is to be outside as a visual reminder that this bill is wildly unpopular. I encourage you all to bring home made signs that respectfully protest this bill.

BE SURE TO WEAR RED and bring homemade posters if you can, car pooling is highly recommended!

If you have any questions, please give Kerry a call at (703) 629-8838 or email Kerry@fairfaxgop.com!

We’ll see you on Friday morning!

  16. So, what does Regnin really do?

The liar lawyer, the retired Regnin --- I guess that leaves Peter Greenberg.

Good -- he was my first choice in any case! A restrained self-confident business-person at the helm is what RA needs-- not some has-been ambulance-chaser lawyer; who-knows-what-she-does Regnin or, God forbid, another megalomaniac incompetent witch like Smyers

Why is it that every time I go running on the W&OD half of the 40-something-year-old dudes wearing spandex on their bikes stare at my crotch as they zoom on past me? Does Reston have an even larger closeted homosexual community than I ever imagined possible?! Maybe instead of being "awesome" Reston is really "fabulous?"

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, Rod, a grand idea to have a CANAL to connect all the lakes in Reston. In your rambling conversation did you ask your innovative friend how he proposes the canal is supposed to maneuver across the toll road to connect Lake Newport and Lake Thoreau??

Also, please kindly stop littering our windshields with your campaign fliers. kthxbye

  20. Bico, how can you possibly tell if they are staring at your crotch if they are on bikes?

  21. Rod,

You've finally outed yourself as a crackpot teabagger!

Party of NO will lose on Sunday and finally the MAJORITY of Americans will get what they wanted when they voted out the bums in 2008.

If I didn't have to be some place else, I'd go just to protest you idiot protestors.

Anonymous @ 7:34: I like to try to make eye contact with and smile at people who pass by me when I'm on my runs to appear friendly and non-hostile. Since 90% of the people whom I say "Good morning" or "How ya doin?" to don't return the greeting I've largely stopped doing that, but a smile and commitment to make eye contact at least shows a minimal effort that I'm acknowledging the presence of someone else. When I go to make eye contact with some of these dudes and notice their eyes glancing towards a spot on my body below my face it makes me feel very uneasy. I'm in excellent physical condition, but that doesn't mean I necessarily want to be salivated over by gentlemen nearly twice my age (or over twice my age). It would be nice if I could flirt with someone my own age on the trail once in a while, but Reston indeed has a noticeable dearth of peers in the 18-24-year-old demographic because of its emphasis on families and the elderly. I hope to change that soon to help make Reston a place where ALL age groups would feel welcome! Reston is a great place, and it took therapy, soul-searching, and prayer for me to finally realize this (which is why I'm relocating to the town center instead of Arlington after all). However, it's depressing that so few youths actually call this place home. I'm not ageist, but I don't want to "date" someone my father's age. Sorry.

  23. I peeked into the window at the supermarket that is to open in Tall Oaks Shopping Center. The shelves are partially stocked, so I hope it opens soon.

  24. Bico- part of your problem is that most people in the demographic you mention (18-24) are in college (or, at the upper limit, in grad school). Why would a college kid live in Reston? There's no campus nearby.

  25. Had it occurred to you, BiCO that maybe you're projecting your own horniness on these other guys? Or that maybe they're looking away because they don't want to interact with anybody, especially since their might be homosexuals trolling for dates or, at least, flirts on the W&OD? I do this all the time downtown, especially with the PIRG or Green Peace people who practically demand that you stop and talk to them, no matter how busy or hungry you might be. Eye contact invites verbal contact. Lack of eye contact and intentional lack of eye contact is meant to dissuade other parties from conversation.

Just think, BiCO, if you, as a homosexual, find it disturbing being mentally undressed by some strange guy on the W&OD, just imagine what it must be like for the heterosexual guys by some strange guy who might be a homosexual.

  26. Does anyone about the guy who is always cleaning the intersection at Baron Cameron & Town Center Parkway? Is he homeless or something? He looks like Santa Claus. This homeless Santa Claus always comes out in the spring/summer, with has a shopping cart full of cleaning goodies, and is always cleaning the same intersection. Sometimes, I see him cleaning near the ramp to the Fairfax County Pkwy. But, he never crosses over to Herndon. I guess Herndon should get it's own homeless Santa Claus.

I think this year someone gave him a safety vest. He scared the crap out of me. It was near sunset, and I was going on Bameron Cameron towards Herndon. I wanted to turn into Bennigton woods so I changed lanes into the turn lane, and he was standing on the turn lane cleaning it. Luckily, he was far away so I could go back to the travel lane safely. His safety vest was helpful.
