Flashback Monday: The Original Nature House

The shiny new earth-friendly Walker Nature Center opened its doors this weekend, fulfilling a pledge in the original Reston master plan by providing a year-round space for programs and events. Bob Simon is thrilled! But let's not forget the original Nature House, a pavilion which was home to countless activities and summer camps and odd Halloween nature walks and whatnot. Here's a picture of the original groundbreaking, which goes to show you that regardless of the era, middle-aged white folk pretending to shovel dirt (or leaves?) in a ceremonial fashion never go out of style, the end.

    Hey, isn't making fun of middle-aged white folk both agist and racist? I thought that was contrary to Reston's egalitarian roots.

    The lady on the left is the widow of Vernon Walker - very sweet couple. Their sons had Harleys - VERY LOUD HARLEYS and lived at home

    Back then I was just a boy in the neighborhood and he struck me as John Muir-ish, unassuming and quiet. My recollections may be from his latter days when he was sick.

    Anon 10:07 perhaps in latter days. In his heyday I'd swear he enjoyed setting folks against one another. Every time we approached agreement he'd throw some new factor into contention. Back to square one.
