Video Killed the Radio Star, or Maybe at Least an Indoor Rec Center

Okay, this video has become the second best video ever made in or about Reston. (This one, of course, will never lose its title as the undisputed Most Awesome Reston Video Ever.) All we know is they had us when the guy on the motorcycle wiped away tears. Thanks to all the many people who forwarded this to us; if nearly as many people show up to the last of the "community input" meetings at 7pm Tuesday at Sunset Hills Montessori School, it'll be a long evening.

  1. An engineering study from Urban Planning, about $10,000.
    A consultants report from B&D, about $90,000.
A video from Save Browns Chapel, priceless.

  4. Someone should forward this, and backround on the story, to the local TV news departments -- a great example of gov't intentions not meeting the needs of the community...

  6. In a nutshell, the Town Center inhabitants want the rest of the community to pay more in dues and give up land and quality of life to support their lifestyle.

"The meeting, organized by the Alliance of Reston Clusters and Homeowners (ARCH) and the Working Alliance of the Town Center Homeowners (WATCH), included presentations in favor of the new recreational center and two rounds of questions. Robert Goudie, the ARCH Issues Committee Chair and WATCH president, moderated the event and presented questions to Reston Association (RA) and Reston Community Center (RCC) leadership."

  7. Per the comment at 11:52 about getting this video to local TV stations -- for a start, try Gail Pennybacher, who is the Fairfax bureau chief for WJLA-Channel 7.

  8. Cute video. But, did it appear that the scenes of the few people using the open space had to be staged? I walk through the park at least twice a day everyday and see people walking on the paths, early morning bootcamp fitness groups, the occasional cricket match, a few "campers" (not the RA day camp kind) in the woods, and the RA day camps in the summer. I've never seen anyone playing frisbee, catch, kickball or anything else on the open fields. I imagine that this is partly a result of hyper-scheduled families, and partly because most residents in the immediate area have at least some outdoor living space at their homes. Other than the Asian Festival, I don't recall any events at Brown's Chapel Park. Maybe SBC should organize a series of family events at the park to remind people that it's there and to generate authentic interest in community spaces. Maybe the locals really don't know what they've got. Maybe ...
