Not for the Faint of Heart: RESTONIAN STORM WATCH TEAM Coverage of the Aftermath of Hurricane Irene

fr_1041.jpg

A member of the RESTONIAN STORM WATCH TEAM sent us this shocking photo of the devastation following what appears to have been a massive tidal surge along a tributary feeding into Lake Anne. What must have been a massive wall of water appears to have lifted paddleboats like so many... paddleboats and deposited them neatly several feet from the shores of the now deceptively placid lake. "If I didn't know better, it almost appears if they had been moved there as a precaution before the storm started," surmised RESTONIAN STORM WATCH TEAM's chief meteorologist. Such is the awesome power of nature, the end.

So, how did everybody here survive Ireneageddon?

Much to my everlasting surprise, here at Peasant World Headquarters we did not lose power during the storm. Ironically, it went out for 15 minutes at 9:00 a.m. this morning just as the sun was starting to peek through; my neighbor speculates that perhaps Dominion had to power down our part of the grid to make a repair elsewhere. Since we're on the circuit that feeds off the overhead line on Lawyers Road, I was sure we would be hit, but maybe it was our turn to be lucky after having been hit by this winter's snowstorm, as well as Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

Kudos to Dominion for the rapid restoration of power in NoVa. 119,000 customers in this region were without power as of 8:30 this morning; now at 12:30 p.m. it's down to 76,000.

  2. I noted one positive result from Irene: the Einstein Bros bagel shop was empty when I went in at 8:30. All varities of bagels were available. Truly a Sunday morning to remember!

  3. Definitely a palpable lack of panic.

  4. There were a catastrophically large number of leaves in the street this morning.

  5. Oh the devastation! Wind knocked over a pepper plant on my deck.

Power was out for about 13 hours. Peasant, you must inhabit the more desirable part of Less Desirable South Reston.

  6. Wow! That's impressive. I wonder if anyone snapped any photos when the water was at its highest point?

  7. We didn't lose power in North Point, not even a flicker. But then again, this part of Reston rarely loses power. Even during snowmaggedon we didn't lose power. Those are the perks when you live amongst the rich.

  8. I must live down-grid from Peasant. I'm off the same circuit, close to St. John Neumann and ours was out 11 hours. But I agree -- kudos to Dominion Power. Everytime I listen to post-storm coverage (any kind of storm) out of Montgomery County I snicker. At least our power company knows what to do!

Anon 6:17 -- bite me. At least when the apocalypse comes -- and it will come -- those of us south of the toll road will know how to use non-electric can openers.
