Kick the Can No More: Excelsior Proposal Recommended for Approval

Screen shot 2010-06-22 at 10.15.14 AM.jpgAfter numerous postponements, the Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended approval of the Excelsior LLC proposal to build two residential buildings with 457 units and 830 parking spaces on the Oracle Campus on Sunset Hills Drive. The plan, which was recommended for denial by those killjoys in the county planning staff earlier this year, now goes to the Board of Supervisors later this month.

Unlike the Fairway proposal, which has been postponed indefinitely, this one appears to be moving forward, and it will become the first major project the Board of Supervisors will consider following the Comstock Wiehle proposal at the site of the future Metro station. It definitely won't be the last.

  1. The traffic in that area will be a nightmare! Will they widen the roads to accomodate all of those additional vehicles?

  2. Thanks ever so much, Planning Commission. I hope someday that your heart attack has to pass along that strip of Reston Parkway on the way to Reston Hospital during the lunch hour.

    No Growth is Smart Growth.

  3. Are each of us who complain in this filthy rag doing something?

An editorial, a letter to Cathy Hudgins, the Planning Commission, and the Task Force?

We don't have to end up like Arlington. Fairfax County can't build its way out of the budget crisis.

Somehow, I don't think that Ms. Hudgins or any of the Task Force team visits the Restonian regularly.

We don't have to allow the high density just because there was a study in 2002 that recommended it. I stopped voicing because the task force didn't listen from the beginning because it had already been decided that we would grow by leaps and bounds and they were to determine how. I can't devote a career to this endeaver. But each of us can make a difference with a little effort.

Thanks to all of the Reston 2020 members who are working on this. I hope that they reinforce that Reston cannot build beyond what our infrastructure can manage.

But Convict, you probably already are doing your part.

  5. I would like to join anon 9:03 in thanking the Reston 2020 members for giving up so much of their time and energy to be a part of this development process. I have noticed that Reston 2020 has also maintained a tone for participation that is very positive and constructive. Hats off to them and - thank you. I will now write my letter to my Reston neighbor, Ms. Hudgins, to ask her to stop offering up her hometown as a tasty morsel to her land starved county counterparts...

NIMBY, NIMBY, NIMBY! Thank GOD I'm moving out of Reston soon! Dense transit-oriented development is EXACTLY what this place needs.

  8. Good riddance, 'Hoods. Reston will be a far better place without your insipid whining.

  9. Yeah, good for you 'Hoods.

We moved from Merrifield to Reston BECAUSE we valued the less dense development along with all the trees and greenery. Let them continue TOD in Merrifield and leave Reston alone.

  12. I thought HOOD/BICO was long gone. Not even worth the effort to respond. Hope that you find your high density happiness where you're going.
