The Deer Hunter II: Hunt Harder in South Reston

TheDeerHunter.jpgHey, remember that time the RA lost a lawsuit over whether it would allow two South Reston residents to use "bow hunting services" to "manage" (i.e., slaughter) deer populations on their property?

Yeah, that was awesome. Apparently, the huntin' fun continues to this day. A Confidential Restonian Operative forwarded a letter she and others in her neighborhood received from the RA about this very matter.

Dear Reston Neighbor,

The owner of the above referenced property has requested permission from the Reston Association (R.A) Board of Directors to hunt deer on their property, per Reston Association Use and Maintenance Standards Resolution 12, Hunting.

The purpose of this letter is notify you of such request and to inform you the RA Board of Directors will be discussing the request at its meeting on Thursday July 29,2010 at 7:00 PM at RA's (relocated) main office at 72001. Sunrise Valley Drive. The Board will consider this request and you will have the opportunity to comment on the hunting application at the meeting.
Of course, the Reston Association hasn't put the minutes from that meeting on its fancy "web site" as of yet -- it's only been two weeks, after all -- so we don't know whether bows are blazin' in South Reston. But our Confidential Restonian Operative says the lack of panic in her neighborhood has been palpable.
It started out in a concerned, "won't somebody think of the children" vein, but pretty quickly devolved into a discussion of what equipment Wile E. Coyote would use to kill deer.
Wile E. Coyote wouldn't try to kill deer; even we know he wants to eat roadrunners. But assuming he did, we think he'd try something like this:

  2. I am SO SO SO in favor of culling the deer. However, my son also spends a LOT of time in the Glade area, so I'm a little concerned that only the residents of that neighborhood were notified. I guess if it goes forward, the paths around that area will be temporarily closed?

  3. Minutes -- we don't need no stinking minutes!! Check out the "Wedding Speech FAIL" on the included "FAILBlog" YouTube video for actual video of the meeting.

    Anon 4:23,
    "culling" = "killing", right?

  5. please, Kathy Driscoll, can we permanently station bowhunters in the bambi nursery you allowed Rolband to create in Snakeden, please?

We haven't had deer in the neighborhood backyards for 20 years until this year. Now their eating the formerly healthy beds of hostas to extinction.

  7. I offer my back yard to gut and skin the bambis. The hoofed rats avoid the scent of a fresh kill.

The deer repellant sold at Lowes works. That said, it is also people repellant. The olefactory essence of a hot night underneath the stands at a SLHS football game.

  8. Has anyone ever been able to find on the RA website the Use and Maintenance Standards mentioned above? If so, can you add a link in the comments section here? Damned if I can find it.

The RA Board actually approved the motion to allow the hunting, with many many conditions. The final condition was that more conditions will be spelled out later in a more detailed agreement. However, the RA Board was generally supportive of the idea of getting rid of the excess dear since the RA staff, VA state biologists, and Fairfax County biologists are all in agreement that the deer are doing great damage to the woods in Reston (they refer to the woods as "forests").

The biggest round of applause went to the RA person who suggested that the best use of RA money to help the "forests" would be get the county and/or state to tell RA how many deer we should have, and how many we do have, and RA would hire hunters to bring those numbers together.

This particular proposal was only for one yard in Hawk Ridge (the real Best of Reston) on Buckthorn Lane. Some other speakers were interested in adding their yards to the hunt area, but all were in Hawk Ridge, far from the Glade.
