Dude, Where's My County?

Screen shot 2010-06-17 at 8.28.33 PM.jpg

This fancy "inter-active" Web machine thingy from Forbes magazine shows the flow of people to and from Fairfax County, where we lay our scene. While we're no demographers, with the red lines indicating people leaving and the black ones showing people coming, we have to conclude that Fairfax County is a net importer of people from New Jersey, who apparently either become a) insufferable elitists who then move to the even smugger Bay Area, or b) chaw-spewin' southerners who opt to head to warmer climes within striking distance of a NASCAR track.

On the plus side, we bet that one dude who moved to Fairfax from Permafrost County, North Dakota is pretty cool.

Au contraire, Restonian, according to that Forbes thingy it was actually 26 people moving from Ward County, North Dakota, to Fairfax. Almost certain reason for this migration is that Minot AFB is located there, so this was probably Air Force personnel being transferred to the Pentagon. Not a single person going the other way.

Minot AFB houses part of the U.S. nuclear deterrent, both Minuteman III ICBMs and nuclear-armed B-52s.

Why Not Minot, to quote an old Air Force saying.

  3. Wait -- General Buck -- that doesn't mean that the folks aren't pretty cool...

Seriously, I wonder what this would look like if they controlled for military personnel and took them out of the picture. The military families generally add so much positive influence to our schools, landscapes, and neighborhoods. Most of them teach their kids this old fashioned concept called "respect." I wish more military families moved to our area, but they tend to congregate in Springfield, Burke and other more(?) affordable locations. Our schools could certainly use the influence.

  5. Hey convict, you have to take 10 people with you for it to show up on the line...so maybe you can start a sign up list and then once you're there, play a game of "who gets voted off the island?" Ha ha

  6. I know why some many from NJ- myself included- have fled. NJ has one of the highest tax burdens in the US, fewer opportunities for jobs as result of those taxes, high housing prices, high cost of living, traffic (yes, worse than here)and dysfunctional/corrupt politics.

All but one of my high school friends have left NJ. All for the same reasons. We are refugees from decades of mismanagement. That may change with Gov Christie.
