Toddler Dies in Fall From Townhouse Window

Nothing funny at all about this.

A 2 1/2 -year-old toddler was killed Saturday in Reston when he fell out of a third-story townhouse window in what appeared to be a "tragic accident," Fairfax County police said.

The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. in the 11000 block of Heritage Oak Court.

The window was open but covered by a screen, said county police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

She said a sibling and a parent were home at the time. The boy lived at the house, Caldwell said.

Police were still investigating Saturday night, Caldwell said.

  2. Terribly, terribly sad. And a good reminder for those of us with toddlers to be extra careful with the upstairs windows now that the weather is warmer.

  5. This is so very sad.

This happens frequently this time of year as folks open their screened windows for the first time after the long winter.

Anon 4:03. Don't be so snide and condescending. There, but for the grace of God, go you or someone close to you. As a parent of several children, who've all made it to adulthood, thank God, I know from experience that you can be watching a 2.5 year old like a hawk and they'll scoot away while you're sneezing.

Didn't Eric Clapton lose a child this way?

  9. There is no greater tragedy than the loss of a child. My deepest sympathies go out to the family. I can only imagine the pain they are feeling. This is so incredibly sad.

  10. I know this isn't as serious, but be careful with your pets, too. They can push screens off without realizing it, unfortunately. In the veterinary world we call this "High Rise Syndrome" - yeah, it's so common that it's a named syndrome. My sympathies to the child's family and friends, I am so sorry.
