Mark Your Calendar: Wiehle Metro Community Meeting

A "community meeting" on the Wiehle Avenue Metro station will be held tomorrow morning.

On Saturday, March 20, at 9 a.m. Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D- Hunter Mill) and the Department of Planning and Zoning (DPZ) will host a community meeting to provide the community an opportunity to generate ideas for the Wiehle Avenue Transit station. The meeting takes place at Langston Hughes Middle School, Cafeteria, 11401 Ridge Heights Road, Reston.

DPZ will also be reporting on the results for the Brainstorming Activity for the Herndon/Monroe station area.

Hudgins encourages all Reston residents to come out and participate in the planning process for the Wiehle station. “The whole community should be involved in the process,” Hudgins said. “We all want to retain Reston’s existing natural beauty, vibrancy and sense of community. Working together, I know we can do that.”

Questions regarding the meeting may be forwarded to Heidi Merkel of Department of Planning and Zoning at 703-324-1380.
We're hoping for more rad '80s art, but that's just us.

  1. They call it a "planning" meeting so they can check it off the list and say they provided community input. Like the master plan the county does not want community input, they just want to say they got it. Have you ever been to one of these meetings? I attended the master plan land college and community meetings. It is a complete sham.

  2. As I was reading this, I was wondering whether the design wasn't already a foregone conclusion. After all, I doubt that they would heed my suggestion under any circumstances to put the station on the east side of the Wiehle instead of the west side.

I guess they want some input on the location of the newspaper vending boxes. In fact, I doubt they'll even allow us to bring up the issue of the proposed bronze statue of Cathy Hudgins looking off to the future done in the best Socialist Realism style.

  4. All about the Wiehle area but none of anything discussed will influence the current proposal for Wiehle Comstock only about surrounding properties and perhaps development at Isaac Newton Square.

  5. I'm for building one big box of a building instead of a number of buildings surround a odd plaza/drive way. Put a plaza on top and it could be a great view.

  6. I don't know why they keep bringing up the topic of preserving open space. Unless the parcels along the RCIG can be consolidated and there's zero percent chance of that happening, the open space that'll remain will be very fragmented and small. I think they're better off preserving the undeveloped land towards Hunter Mill Rd. That road is already a continuous parking lot till second light after Lawyers.

  7. A couple of server farm buildings would reduce road traffic in the area.

  8. ANON 11:23 . .

I don't want to look at buildings while driving all the way down Sunset Hills, it's hot, ugly, and it's isn't Reston Town Center. . . with all of my effort I will advocate for it to look as much like Sunrise Valley as possible . . . The bank property on the corner is one of the worst looking parcels - could be anywhere shouldn't have been built in Reston.

  9. Rod . . . like big box development like Target?

  10. Thanks Restonian for keeping me informed . . . where do I go when I really need to know what is happing? Here. . . . where can I easily find pictures of the current proposal? Here, not the RA website, nor the County website for some reason.

Unfortunately, the seriously nasty attacks in the comment areas on all sides would turn away many "middle of the road", busy Reston residents.

  11. Rod,

    *sarcasm* Brilliant idea!

This from the man who wants to link all of the lakes by canal.

The RA board is not the place for your stream of consciousness hair-brained ideas. If anyone actually votes for this guy, they are doing all of their fellow Restonians a disfavor. Can you imagine 3 years of this drivel?

    Vote ANYONE but Koozman!

    HCKD:

In fairness to Rod, it wasn't his idea to link the Reston lakes by canal; he was merely relaying an idea someone had mentioned to him.

Still, if Rod gets elected and this plan goes into effect, maybe the waterway could be called in his honor Rod's Stream of Consciousness?

(A little attempt at humor there to lighten up what has been several weeks of a dark and dismal tone in the comments section.)

  13. LOL @ "Rod's Stream of Consciousness"

Too bad Reston isn't a dream or I'd vote for Ron. He'd have groups of people singing together drinking Coca-Cola, and birds in the trees wondering how many licks in a Tootsie Roll Pop, and people in a NASA spaceship sending out a raygun blast that unites the flowers and the lakes in an explosion of laughter and rainbows.

Wait, that sound pretty good... I'll have what he's having.

  14. Ya one big box with a plaza on top as opposed to many little boxes with a odd narrow plaza deep down in the middle. Of course you still have to draw in what goes into the big box. The first or second could be pedestrian accessed by the walkway from the MERTO. How about a kind of open area where you could have on a rotating basis a farmers market/crafts/auction house/outdoor entertainment. With this kind of a set up and parking inside you could really go as high as you wanted. Maybe canal going along the length of it with gondolas and some sort of up in the sky monorail linking it with the town center.

  15. And maybe people taking off and landing on the roof in motorized hand gliders!

  16. Rod, I have a new idea for you to run with. Human pneumatic tube system! It could replace the paths because you could go vertically not just horizontally! I think you're the one to get it started, Rod, it's just up your alley! :)

  17. Rod, I'm not sure which of the transit possibilities you mention - the gondola, the "MERTO", or the "hand" glider - I like best.

  18. Sunrise Valley just has thin rows of trees to hide acres of parking lots between it and the toll road. I guess it's nice to look at when you're driving down Sunrise Valley. Out of sight and out of mind.

  20. Some original oaks are better than none which is what they are proposing now.
