This Week in Crime: Apple Store, Fox Mill Exxon and Hunters Woods Pedestrian All Robbed

"Grab-n-go" now has a different meaning at the Fox Mill Exxon, the Apple Store, and a tunnel near Hunters Woods Plaza, all sites of recent robberies, according to police.

images.jpegThe Apple store in Reston Town Center got hit for the third time since it opened last summer, though this time police got their man boys:

Police responded to a report of computers and electronics being stolen from the Apple store, located at 11949 Market Street on Jan. 7 at about noon. The suspects grabbed the merchandise and fled in a silver minivan. A passerby provided police the license plate number of that suspect vehicle and officers found it on the Dulles Toll Road. A felony vehicle stop was conducted and seven subjects were detained.
Meanwhile, the Fox Mill Exxon was burglarized by someone cunning enough to know how to turn off the alarm system, which probably rules out this guy:
The Exxon gas station, located at 2601 Quincy Adams Drive, was burglarized between 11 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 5 a.m. on Jan. 12. An employee discovered the burglary. An investigation determined the alarm system was disabled. The cash register and safe were opened and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. The suspect was not located.
Finally, the Reston paths are as tranquil as ever, especially around Hunters Woods Plaza:
A 30-year-old man was robbed on Jan. 8 while walking outside. At about 9:26 p.m. the man was approached from behind on a pathway just east of the Colt’s Neck Road tunnel. Three men assaulted the victim, knocking him to the ground. They took the victim’s cellular phone and money then fled on foot. The victim walked to the Hunters Woods Village Center and called police. He did not require medical attention. The suspects were described as black, 20 to 30 years old. They all wore black, hooded sweatshirts and black pants.
Don't they always, though. Don't they always.

The Gulag: Because Anacostia is just too far away!

(For us, crime is a contact sport.)

What? I thought Reston was all sunshine, ice cream, and puppies in DRB-approved shades of ecru?

  3. We need another police sting with a snazzy name. Operation Chill Out?

  4. In my 6-mile commute, Gulag to San Herndon, it is rare to pass a day without at least one speed trap. I shop in Hunters Woods and the 7-11 on Soapstone. It is rare to see a patrol car in either high-crime zone. Never a foot patrol.

Do you think, Ms. Hudgins, that the county could reduce FCPD revenue quotas? Give FCPD more time to Serve and Protect?

I'm sure the cops would be happier if they could be real policemen, instead of shaking down commuters for traffic fines.

  5. Interesting that the perps who robbed the Apple store had to come all the way out to Reston from Washington. Not enough easy pickings in DC?

Per scubadiver's comment, I have never, ever, seen a foor patrol anywhere in Reston in the 11 years I have lived here.

  7. Notice the perps struck soon after seeing video that said it's only 20 minutes to downtown DC.

I see the two Jehovahs Witnesses on bikes quite often in North Reston. They annoy the hell out of people and keep crime down.

2:28, every bank I've ever been to in the District has bullet proof plexiglass between the tellers and the unwashed masses. Heck, even in many of the bodegos and fast food places, you'll have the same arrangement. I've never seen that in the 'burbs. That is, until I went to SunTrust branch in Centreville just last week.

Is there a crime problem at the intersection of routes 28 & 29 that rivals that of our own piece of paradise that I have not been privy to? Loitering and illegal day laborers I could understand. But armed robbery?

  9. I don't know a whole lot about crime, but reading about it here it does seem that criminals tend to travel to do their crime. It makes sense. Why would you commit a crime in a neighborhood you normally are in - people would recognize you much more easily. The Restonian criminals, though, seem to be a lot more ambitious and travel all the way to Tenessee! Then again, weren't those guys who were targeting Indian households from New York and New Jersey? All this regional and interstate travel would make for a great Google Maps mashup!

  10. Dvdmom - most criminals actually do NOT travel far to do their crime. They're criminals largely because they're lazy.

The guys as described in those hits above are crashing in and around Reston with 'friends' or 'family' who won't practice tough love and tell them to go back home.

There actually is a hierarchy within crime, and the guys who traveled from NY and NJ to target Indian households were higher on the food chain than the typical 'stop and rob' that we see in and around the trails in Reston. Thus, they travel.

  11. The Shadowwood/Soapstone 7-11 was missed this week?

    How can that be?
