Icecapades on Lake Audubon? Yet Another Reston Mystery to Crowdsource

Restonian operative "Ryan" sent us this eyewitness account of police and fire activity on Lake Audubon on Friday:

When I drove by this morning, there were about a half-dozen fire trucks and a few police cars parked in the parking lot at the Lake Audubon pool. Firefighters were out crawling on the ice about 30 feet from shore. I drove by again at 3 pm and they were still out there.

Training exercise? Looking for stolen bottles of Tequila? Seems weird even for Reston.
Anyone know what was going on? Sound off, in the comments.

Update: Mystery solved. Sadly, the reenactment of the most recent RA board meeting by tutu-wearing former Olympians will have to wait until the next cold snap.

  1. My husband was walking our dog down there yesterday and he asked the guys in red and yellow what was going on. They said they were doing various water rescue techniques. Each fire station in the County came at a different time of the day to practice.

  2. It was exciting to watch. Various firemen trained at rescuing other firemen stuck in the ice. I saw one man with a rope manage to get out and roll away from the hole. It wouldn't be easy to get out! There was a problem earlier in the week with kids walking and biking on the ice so a announcement was made by South Lakes principal urging kids not to.

It was odd watching rescue personal play at rescue what would mean certain death without the right equipment. A person seeing another person or dog in the ice would also subject themselves to death if they ventured forth to rescue the person in the ice brcause they themselves would fall through the ice.

I spoke to fire personnel who were friendly and walked right up to view the operation.

I am aware that boaters often drown in the first few minutes of falling in the water when it is cold because the shock renders them unable to swim BUT with life preservers they can endure some half or hour in such frigid water.

Soon there will be the will jump in a hole in the ice at Lake Ann for recreation which i saw last year.

I took a few photos which would be exciting if I could figure out how to get them off my cell phone.

  7. If you'll help me overcome this frightful bout of gas, I'll be happy to walk hand in hand with you all around the world someday.

Until then, I should be alone and we should all be afraid.
