We Can't Have Nice Things, Pt. 93: Reston Recycling Center to Close, All Because Lady Bey Poster Incomprehensibly Considered Garbage

008

Our Other South Reston Confidential Restonian Operative "Southie" sent us an electronic mail with some shocking news: Fairfax County's Reston South recycling center, known more officially as the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services West Ox/I-66 Transfer Station Recycling and Disposal Center's Reston South Park & Ride Recycling Drop-Off Facility (or FCDPWESWO/I66TSR&DCRSP&RRD-OF for short) will close due to "illegal dumping of old furniture, appliances, and other items." By way of proof, the county posted the shocking photo below of the FCDPWE...whatever:

Garbage

Where they see "garbage," we see some perfectly functional household furnishings, including a totally safe and trustworthy baby seat (once you turn it right-side up and maybe run it through an industrial defumigator). While Chapter 109.1 of the Fairfax County Code now requires curbside recycling, rendering trips to this Mecca of good taste obsolete, we'll be sad to see this monument to Reston's resourcefulness and spirit of neighborly sharing perish. We only hope they keep the poster of Lady Bey as a reminder of happier, or at least less sanitary, days, the end.

  1. This is a red herring... county has plans to change road pattern in this area or something worse. Remember when they tried to squash a residential development in here several years ago? How much does county actually spend removing unauthorized items here? Wait until they are dumped along roadsides. Many folks used and loved having this recycling center here. Boo on this removal!

What turned this recycling center into Dumpsterama-ville was the addition of the charity drop-off bins. Before those bins were placed there, I don't think I ever saw any castoff furniture and other junk. As soon as the bins arrived, the lazy slobs in our midst took it as an excuse to dump their crap there with a semi-clear conscience -- "Why of course this ratty stuffed chair from 1972 would be a valuable donation to some unfortunate but deserving soul".

I'll be curious to see if the slobs still dump there once the recycling bins are removed. I wouldn't rule out the possibility, especially if the charity bins remain. Getting rid of the recycling containers? Then get rid of the charity bins as well.

  3. How does removing a facility for recycling ease residents' needs for recycling?

  4. I agree that this move might also allow for alterations to that intersection, but that is a welcome change. The current mess can be improved, and with that weird gas line easement on the southeast corner of the Reston Pkwy/Lawyers intersection, it looks like they have room to get creative. A Fox Mill overpass would be bitchin', don't you think? Or a triple roundabout like the ones on Rte 32 near Ft Meade? The mind boggles..
