Derechopocalypse 2012: In Search of Comic Relief

Update: Power's finally back on at Reston Town Center, according to our BFFs at Patch, who've done a bang-up job on this whole derecho thing. As the following "web cam" footage attests, hooking the power back up took careful planning -- and encountered setbacks:

Now it's back to the same old, same old:

Update: As of Monday morning, power still out at Reston Town Center and countless other locations around our earth-toned community. Thanks, Dominion Power! At great expense, we've established a fancy live "web cam" connection to RTC so we can observe the heroic restoration efforts unfolding there:

Oh, wait.

Ouch. THAT hurts. Also, the 22-story Midtown Condos in RTC is being evacuated because its emergency generator is running out of fuel. But don't worry -- Dominion's list of work sites for Monday has tons of locations in Herndon and Great Falls -- and a whopping three in Reston, on Hunt Club Road, Reston Avenue, and Lawyers Road. What, are they just looking at lists of street names and picking the toniest-sounding ones?

Update: Seriously? Still no power in Reston Town Center on Sunday evening? We guess we should just be thankful that we didn't get the boil water order that we saw in third world countries Merrifield. Fortunately for us, the Sinclair ZX-81 that powers this "web log" runs on 2 AA batteries.

We think a lot of people are asking this question tonight.

Bright side.jpg
Looks like someone managed to find the bright side to this whole mess.

Here's one way you can help others.

We're all due for a feel-good story. Especially one involving puppies.

Yep, there's not too much funny about last night's unexpected storm, especially for the hundreds of thousands in the region who are still without power and may be for some time. Is there?

Hyattrave.jpg

Okay, so maybe it's sort of funny imagining the Hyatt resembling an early 90s rave. Anything else?

NEED THREE MEN TO REPLANT A TREE THAT SOMEWHAT BLEW OVER IN STORM LAST NIGHT .......EASIER IF YOU ARE COMING FROM HERNDON/STERLING

NOT THAT FAR OF A DRIVE....

NEED TO PROVIDE WORKING CELL NUMBER IN RESPONSE .....

We guess this craigslist job posting we found on something called "LiveBloggerJobs" (don't judge!) is also kind of funny. Or maybe just overly optimistic. But that's pretty much it. Be careful out there.

  1. I think this is gawd's way of showing that he is displeased with us and that we should raze RTC/AWOD.

  2. We need to remain vigilant!

This is just the opportunity those heathen bastards in Herndon have been waiting for to invade our earth-toned paradise!

  3. Unexceptable. My credit card is still at the bar!

  4. Very frustrating. All of the films currently being screened at Bow Tie Cinema at RTC suddnely stopped on Sunday afternoon when the shaky Dominion power shut off after another brain fart. Apparently, Victoria's Secret overloaded the fragile system with a Drerecho Special, which featured a 'buy two skimpy 'ho outfits, get a 50 Shades of Grey AC/DC vibrator massage while being fanned over a slab of ice by a homeless massage therapist who has escaped the rising temperatures of the non-airconditioned Embry Rucker Shelter.' What a sour Movie Goer experience I had. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter stopped right at the point when Lincoln was about to consumate his first homosexual experience after biting into the neck of General Robert E. Lee. I'll have to the ending on the 4th of July and learn whether or not the Confederate Battle Flag was altered by Jefferson Davis after the Battle of Gettysburg to include a rainbow pattern.

  5. Damn, Mean Daddy D. You should at least have put a "Spoiler Alert" tag in your message. Now, you've completely ruined the movie for me.

  6. Peasant From Less Sought After South RestonJuly 2, 2012 at 1:51 PM

Reporting in from the Peasant Alternate Command Site, since the Verizon lines at Peasant World Headquarters are still iffy. Miraculously, the peasants in far south Reston only lost power for 22 hours, since it was restored by 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

In an unprecedented display of good behavior, drivers actually were treating dark traffic lights as four-ways stop signs. Traffic signals today on Reston Parkway are functioning all the way from Sunrise Valley to Northpoint, at least.

And never mind the "heathen bastards in Herndon"; according to Reston Patch our sacred supermarkets have been invaded by the godless heathens from Vienna and McLean who are desperate enough to have deigned hobnobbing with us hoi polloi in search of their Gray Poupon.

And this just in from the New York Times:

A fast-food restaurant without power in Reston, Va., sent out updates via Twitter as burger patties thawed. One message said: “We’re fighting back tears.” "

    Oh, the Bigmackery!

  8. I apologize to The Convict for the spoiler. I just assumed everybody knew that Robert E. Lee was a gay vampire. Uh, Just like I've always assumed that CNN's Silver Fox is gay. Apparently, many are struggling today with the breaking news that up to now has been the biggest open secret since Tom Cruise admitted to being a Total Recall partially sentient being from another planet while hopping around on Mother Oprah's couch.

    http://marquee.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/02/anderson-cooper-says-hes-gay-happy-and-proud/

    Anderson Cooper is gay???!!!

No way. I sure didn't see that one coming.

What's next? Octomom announces that she has the world's most elastic vagina? That confession will come as a big shock, too, I suppose.

  9. Sadly, the Patch mommy blog was most concerned with where to find coffee on Saturday morning, as opposed to news on power outage and road closures

  10. Peasant From Less Sought Ater South RestonJuly 8, 2012 at 12:40 PM

Following info comes from Mrs. Peasant, who has been skulking around the local food empiorums.

    A tale of two Safeways:

Safeway in South Lakes did the equivalent of two weeks of business in three days, since in the aftermath of the derecho, that village center was fully up and running.

Safeway in Hunters Woods, on the other hand, lost an estimated $55,000 in frozen and refrigerated goods that had to be deep-sixed when that village center lost power.

Repeat this latter example across the region to get an idea of the economic impact of the storm, and keep it in mind next time Dominion (for whom I still have a pretty high regard)trots out the same old story that burying even some overhead lines is too expensive and not cost-effective.
