Fancy 'News Paper' Visits Reston, Gets Scoop from 2009 on Reston! License Plate Drive That Began in 2007

RestonLicense0207.gifThe "Washington Post," which is apparently some sort of iPad app that confuses octogenerian journalists, wrote what those of us (not) in the business call an "article" about the ongoing push to get the Virginia DMV to issue awesome Reston! license plates. Not bad, given that we were ridiculously late to the party when we wrote about it over a year ago -- the contest to select the design ended in 2007, apparently back before there were "web logs" or "Internets" or "news papers" in Reston and the only way to hear news was to stand at Lake Anne Plaza as Dear Leader rang a bell and shouted it through a megaphone.

Anyhoo, how's the big campaign going?

The campaign, started by the citizens association three years ago, has seen gradual success. McGuire has collected 150 of the 350 signatures he will need to get the plates processed. Helping his cause is the fact that the plates are not revenue-sharing, meaning they only cost $10 annually. Revenue-sharing plates cost $25 annually, with the extra $15 going to the city or area at hand.

McGuire said signatures are his biggest obstacle.

"Three hundred and fifty people is a good chunk for a town like Reston," said McGuire, who admits he has not been as aggressive in promoting the plates as he would like.
Restonian Secret Operative (or should we say Reston! Secret! Operative! "Ryan" has a theory as to why they haven't collected the 350 signatures:
Perhaps the RA is withholding their support until "and Get Involved" is added. Or, perhaps they are offended by the disturbing lack of bona fide earth tones. Personally, I am not signing until they get rid of that ridiculous exclamation point.
All we know is that if we swipe down on our iPad far enough, we see that the Post says that Reston would be the first town in Virginia to get its own license plate -- except that, as we all know, Reston isn't a town. Details!

You can visit the Reston Citizens Association site, which is sponsoring the initiative, for more details on how to sign up for the plates. They certainly beat these other new plates.

  1. They should have a picture of the Travesty on the W&OD called RTC since concrete is becoming more abundant and trees are becoming scarcer in Reston.

  2. I wonder why they rejected my artwork for the license plate. It was a picture of my pet fox in a skeleton costume.

  3. I think I'll just hang a "Kick Me!" sign on my back bumper. It's cheaper, and the exclamation point would be more appropriate.

  4. Or maybe a yellow sign that says NIMBY ON BOARD.

  5. The tree on this "Reston!!!" license plate looks too much like the Reston Association logo. Possible copyright infringement?

  8. Apropos of nothing above...

Learned that RA may raise your annual assessment fee by $30 or more next year to cover the $400,000 shortfall in revenues caused by the extra rent for their new HQ. The proposal was laid on the table at Monday's Board Administrative Committee (BAC) meeting. For those not familiar with the ins/outs of the RA Board, the BAC is basically a rehearsal for the highly staged official monthly Board meeting later in the week.

Has anyone noticed an improvement in service since they moved? Oh, I forgot, it was all about more space for the employees--that we must pay for.

  9. Wow! Your post is (as always) full of awesomeness! I want a Restonian.org! license plate. In russet brown!!

  10. People aren't signing up to get the plate, because the plate is butt ugly. And $10 a year!

  11. I love the exclamation! C'mon people, as Dwight Shrute would wisely say: "It’s not like they discovered a cure for cancer."

  12. 8:47 What's another $30? Don't be such a cheap skate. The RA HOA dues are a damn good deal.

  13. Just sad the DMV won't approve the things already. In my case, I've decided to create a special edition Centreville! license plate by just writing it in using magic marker.

  14. Maybe Ken Plum would refuse it because as it was when the original town petition came up the various Reston boards haven't given their approval. If Reston gets it's own license plate every town and non town in Virginia will want one.

  15. Go for the plate. It'll be the only green left when the developers are done.

I'm confused. I thought RA didn't have to pay any money for rent the first year. And still they are $400,000 short?

  17. Maybe they spent a lot decorating and for new furnishings not to mention moving itself which I'm guessing they didn't do in house. They just seem to be very lavish. I remember the Brown chapel. First of all there was the hundred thousand dollar study then lavish printed brochures then elaborate art work illustrating the proposed rec center.

  18. That's not a very mauve plate now is it?

    In fact, it's really ugly!
