On The YouTubes: 'Reston Bandstand' Opens the Gates of Hellish Alternate Universe, Another Open Thread

If you like old-timey music, dancing, and watching the Reston Silver Diner morph into a hellish, alternate universe version of itself (fast forward to 2:07), this fancy Web video's for you. Or you could just contribute to this week's open thread. As IBM once said, you make the call.

My, my, but the woman in the freeze frame of the video is showing a lot of thigh. Way to go for the gratuitous near-nudity to get people to visit your web log, Mr. Restonian!

  2. The reason for both high taxes AND program cuts in Fairfax County schools is the soaring costs of employee benefits. Between 2000 and 2011 population in Fairfax County will have increased 10%. Over the same period, the costs of Fairfax County inflation adjusted employee benefits will have increased 112%

  3. The Blue Tit is a small resident bird with striking blue, yellow and green plumage. Blue Tits are inquisitive and bold birds, quite happy to live in close proximity with humans. They are among the first to visit a new bird table and will readily move into nest-boxes where the correct ones are provided. (If your nest-box has a hole large enough for the Great Tit then he will soon move in and kick the Blue Tits out!). While living in your garden the Blue Tits will provide a useful service eating greenfly, rather like the Ladybird (or Ladybug).

  4. What on earth was the point of the video? Was it a promo for SD? For dance classes? No, I couldn't stomach it to the end so if there was a commercial endorsement I missed it. As I am a female of a certain age, I feel well qualified to say that women of a certain age should probably not be twirling their poodle skirts that high at their age...

  8. Well, now, you can get a hug from Ricky Martin --- it's good that he came out and can relax and be a nice, normal human being and enjoy his family and kids.

But, seriously, BiCO --- what are you doing today?

Howdy, howdy! I just blew back into town in record timing---just over three hours from Scranton, PA! Mamma mia does my "zoom, zoom" ever ZOOM! ;-) What am I doing today? Assuming ABC doesn't screw me over again I am eagerly anticipating a new Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters tonight to help me brace for what will likely be a stressful day tomorrow at the office. Meh. Ricky Martin giving me a hug? Hell, I've been rejected by three AVERAGE-looking dudes since I moved here, let alone a pop icon as well. I'm just going to adopt my Siberian Husky and make out with this pampered pooch of mine from now on! ;-)

BiCO, welcome back home from your Scranton PA and Scranton Mamma Mia.

Just a thought about your smooching plans - you might be better off with a husky Siberian than a Siberian husky.

Speaking of things Russki, since this is an open thread: has anyone else encountered a rather strange but apparently harmless Russian dude on the local buses? The guy's somewhere from mid-20's to mid-30's, chubby, glasses, and sort of geeky looking. What's most distinctive about him is that he asks people in a Russian accent straight out of central casting, "Do you speak ROOOOS-ian?" When I asked somebody who actually did, and had gotten into a conversation with him, what our Russki friend wanted, it turns out that he apparently was hoping to get a copy of a DVD made. I've seen Reston's version of Boris Badenov on Metro's 5A bus from Dulles and the Connector's 553. First time I ran into him and got asked the question, I started to look around for a film crew to see if they were making a sequel to Borat.

Convict, since you seem to have some familiarity with things Russian, any insights you can add?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Peasant - Yeah, that guy's been on my 505 bus back from West Falls Church many times. He always has a rolling suitcase and a cellphone, and will never swipe his card unless prompted. "Do you speak Russian? I speak Russian." He sometimes gets into long mobile conversations in Russian.

I asked my driver once about him, and he didn't know much. Strange and intriguing character. One of many who come and go on Reston buses.

  12. Yes, I know this guy. I've had a few conversations with him and helped him get home a couple of times. He's a nuisance and has mental as well as physical health issues but he's harmless. Annoying and socially inappropriate perhaps, but harmless all the same. I feel badly for him.

If you were on the bus when when the other passenger blew up at him on the 551 between the Wiehle P&R and Beacon Ridge in February, then we may have met. I don't know who was the bigger idiot, the Russian kid or the fool that was yelling at him to learn to speak English. I guess the yelling fool was still stressed out from being snowbound for a week.

On an upnote, it was a beautiful weekend and their was no display of death-defying feats and aeronautical wizardry by FCPD over Winterthur. I slept with the windows open and was only disturbed once by a loud, brutish collection of teenagers in the park after midnight.

Pij, Convict: Thanks for the feedback on the intriguing Russian in our midst. I wasn't on the 551 bus, Convict, when the incident happened that you describe, but I agree no need for the passenger to have blown up at Boris. Once you tell him "Nyet, I don't speak ROOOS-ian", he leaves you alone.

And Pij, thanks for the information about blue tits. Until I read your learned discourse, I thought the term was only a semi-lewd anatomical reference about the native hussies of low moral standing who lived on that planet in Avatar.

So, when do we learn the results of the RA election?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I guess he's been looking for a long time, then, for somebody who can dupe some DVDs for him. The last time I spoke to him back in February, that was one of the first things he requested.

Election results announced on 4/13 at RA annual members meeting at Sheraton Reston 7 pm.

You need a reservation to attend(?)

  16. One thing I wonder about the election:
    JBG owns Fairway right?

So they get a vote for each unit?

I'll wager good money Danaher took Lake Anne/Tall Oaks....

  17. I'll bet that the Restonian will be among the first to know the official results. Meanwhile many have asked me where they can get their knives and scissors sharpened? The answer is right now on Tuesdays at:
11895 Grand Commons Avenue (next to the Lucy store)
    Fairfax Corner
    11:30am–2:30pm
    Year-round
As of April 27 this market will run from 3:30pm–6:30pm and return to its previous outdoor location at the corner of Monument Dr. and Government Center Pkwy.

    Wednesdays
Parking lot of the National Realty Building
Corner of Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive
    3:30pm–6:30pm
    Opens April 28

and maybe on Thursdays if I can get the Herndon town council to understand the benign nature of sharpening
    Herndon Centre (Kmart)
    Elden St., Herndon
    3:30pm–6:30pm
    Opens May 13

I am at Curran Fabrics in Mclean around the corner from Giants the first Wednesday (this) of the month where you can drop them off and pick them up at your leisure.

  18. I am a first generation non Russian speaking Russian. In my yearning to connect with my kinsmen have left business cards in the Russian Gourmet bulletin board where I go to get excellent pickles. Could this be the source of mysterious calls from someone who asks< "speak Russian?" To which I say "Net." Then "Only speak Russian," and the phone goes dead. Perhaps it is the same Russian who instead of wanting sharpening wants CD's? I may set up right next to Russian Gormet if all works out well- perhaps I'll then met him?

  21. Just what I wanted to read, Anon. 100,000,000 more people all wanting to consume natural resources like only an American can. The world is doomed, I tell you.

As for you, BiCO. If you can hold out a little longer, there will be 100,000,000 more people here soon. You should be able to get a hug from at least one of them.

@ Convict: You'd be surprised. Thrice I've stuck my toes into the NoVA dating pool, and thrice thus far passing piranhas have bloodied them down to the nubs (YEOWZA!!!) :-/ 100,000,000 more? Meh.

  24. Rod, what is this Russian Gourmet that you speak of??? Is it in Reston? Herndon? I know there's an upscale Russian restaurant there, but I haven't seen a Russian food store in DC since the place in Eastern Market closed. Would be nice to find a place that had some good baklazhanaya ikra, etc.

@ Crushin: The problem? They're all straight, closeted, "confused", excessively selfish, or non-stop horn-doggies. UGH! In regards to the latter I love sex as much as the next person, but I would much prefer quantity AND quality instead of just quantity, which is what I've unfortunately had since moving here---tons of amazing yet passionless intimacy that I just end up regretting in the end. I was led on several times now by dudes trying to "find themselves." I know living in a town...errr.."census designated place"...with its own identity crisis of trying to decide if it wants to be Arlington or Ashburn can't help matters much, but if you still don't know if you like boys or girls by your early-20's then it may be time to actually speak to a professional before you hurt more people by giving them reason to believe you want more than just a good roll in the hay or before you wed someone of the opposite sex only to finally "come out" 30 years later and ruin their lives. I'm so happy in life right now but am so honestly bitter against the men (if you can call them that) here that I'd rather just spend more time volunteering and exerting efforts towards improving the lives of people who truly NEED help instead of wasting time courting and nurturing people who just thrive off of taking advantage of the kindness and compassion of others. The guys here may be more "worldly" than the ones back in Pennsylvania, but they are also unapologetically selfish to the point of making one want to pull his hair out! Imagine a "straight" colleague flirting with you for months only to let you down letting you think he was straight before kissing an ex-friend with benefits (male) of yours at a party in front of you just two weeks later and never seeing any of that as being hurtful. Imagine helping a guy who was at his worst due to alcoholism---including digging his car out of a snow bank and helping him to move after he was "asked to leave"---only to be told you are "too ugly" once you fully rebuild that person to being marketable for someone else. The reason why I really dislike NoVA so much right now is that the people here I've met thus far have largely only shown me the "what's in it for me?" side of society. I've given up hope on thinking Reston actually has DECENT people because outside of my church and helping out on rare occasion with the library I haven't seen any---just self-absorbed poseurs who prey upon people like locusts. Come to think of it, where ARE all of the gay dudes my age in Reston, anyways? (Crickets chirping). I can count the ones I know on one hand. That's pathetic out of a community of 65,000. Where are the guys who want someone to take them to Jimmy's for a cheesesteak on a Friday night followed by dancing/karaoke and cuddling up on my couch with a good movie? Where are the guys who want to go out for a country drive with me to go horseback riding, explore the less-traversed trails, and go spelunking through caverns? Where are the guys who would appreciate a "night out on the town?" Reston is a HUGE black hole for young singles, and a community this large shouldn't be that way. This is why I'm hoping we Arlingtonize the hell out of Reston! LOL! :-) Less soccer moms + more singles = better chances of me not marrying my church.

  27. I have been there and done that.

There are a handful of us out there…that have our priorities figured out and know who they are and are comfortable with themselves. I am approaching the latter half of my twenties and I don’t think I have it all figured out but I have mapped out where and what I intend to do. I have lived my entire life in NoVA…so I am well aware of what the gay dating pool looks like.

But yes, I have similar stories too, BiCO --- the cheaters, the addicts, and the low-lives. Nevertheless, I remain optimistic.

    btw…I love Jimmy’s

I admire your optimism, crushin, and hopefully I, too, can get over being as jaded as I am right now as well! I know there ARE better people out there, but when you strike out thrice in such rapid succession it makes you recoil just a bit. I haven't given up hope permanently, though. ;-) As luck would have it friends and I have made plans to hit up Jimmy's tomorrow evening for cheesesteaks and camaraderie followed by a jaunt to Ned Devine's to see a band play (where I'm sure I'll be making quite a "white boy" of myself getting my groove on!) LOL! For obvious reasons I wouldn't feel comfortable posting any personal information on this blog for all to see, but if you happen to be in the neighborhood tomorrow night I'll be the designated driver of a red Mazda and will probably be accompanied by a bunch of fellow quirky and dorky (yet cool) peeps! I'll be the one with the terribly gelled hair and most like a button-down shirt with tight jeans or baggy cargo shorts. BiCO + alcohol = off-key singing or bad dancing or clothes flying off, and we all know nobody would want to see any of that (even if Reston is the second-most "vulgar" city in America!) LOL!
