Reston: Live, Work, Play, Watch YouTube

Here's something that'll make us all feel better: One of those new-fangled "videos" illustrating Reston's many benefits, including having D.C. "a 20 minute drive away" (perhaps at 3 a.m. when the police are on strike), plus being able to pull tires out of lakes and sit through mind-numbing "community input" meetings. Reston: It's more than a planned real estate development. It's a way of life.

  2. Dude, I got my mellow on , I'm feelin' it ! And that's coming from a Moderate . They neglected , somehow, to mention our happy drivers & lovely traffic - OH , and the drug dealing& other little pesky crimes. Other than that Reston IS a pretty awesome place to live.

  3. I have been working and reworking on my RA canidates statment and qualifications. So far I have come up with:150 words each. Words in excess to be chopped off by RA election committee
Qualifications: I sharpen scissors and knives at farmers markets and hair salons. Scissors and knives, our most basic appliance can in use become dull and unusable. By restoring them to usefulness instead of throwing them away or leaving them in a drawer it saves the cook, hairstylist or consumer time and money. A knife that cuts instead of tears food is a joy to use and a hair scissor for example that cuts rather than slides or folds hair is not only a joy to use but can actually prevent hand injuries. If elected I would hope to bring this same resourcefulness to the Reston Association. I would like it for citizens to be able to use and to perform their will in the Reston Association with less expense and more joy fulfilling Robert Simon’s vision of the best place on the planet a person can live, work and find recreation.
Goals: In order to be a community it is important that Reston have lines of communication that goes both ways. Unfortunately in the past we have had mostly institutional type information from the Reston Association which often makes it seem like a hierarchy. I would like to change that by having a weekly printed newspaper coupled with an internet newspaper devoted to Reston. It would allow citizen to citizen communication and citizen to the RA board communication so that the board could then implement the needs of its citizens. It could largely be self supporting which might help Reston businesses.
I would favor more decisions being voted on in referendum votes WITHOUT board input.
I will never vote for expensive feasibility studies without a clear mandate from the people of Reston.
I am here to work for you and would appreciate your vote.

  4. I've lived in Reston for over 20 years (various locals) ... and grew up in the Alexandria area...

Reston was always the cool place to check out in the 60's and 70's... yes, everyone considered it out in the hinterlands back then, but once you arrived – wow. Despite its growing pains and now aging issues... it’s still a cool place to live...

  5. The Convict in the GulagJanuary 13, 2010 at 1:27 PM

They forgot to mention the really cool aviation displays in Reston. FCPD regularly regularly entertains the locals with its aeronautical feats over our very own Gulag on warm summer weekend nights.

    Bring Roller Derby to Reston!

  6. Go convict go! At the roller derby we'll raise money and program in the funding for a gunshot locator system at Shadowood, Winterthur, Becontree, and Hunter Woods Shopping Center.

  7. I think this is a video that's been on the RA's website for a while, or very much like it. I remember seeing an almost identical video a few months ago when we moved here. It's a very nice promotional piece. Of course they're not going to tell you about Reston's flaws (every place has them!), as it's PR, duh! Take it for what it is. If any of you would like to make some documentary news or "human interest piece" about your experiences in Reston, that would be a welcome addition to the current collection of videos out there - which are almost entirely RA-created...

  8. Restonian,

You are a breath of fresh air! We appreciate your keeping us informed and telling it the way it is.

    Keep it up!

  9. Reston Town Center is almost ocmpletely ignored.

  10. I think BiCO should run for one of the openings -- to bring some youthful thinking on board would at least move them a little bit further towards the middle...and I think his tendency to wax eloquent on many subjects will help with accountability.

  11. Quick! Get Jack Sawyer and John Locke! It is another clue from the DHARMA initiative!

  12. Hickory...er, there's no Jack Sawyer. It's either Jack Shephard or James "Sawyer" Ford that I think you're referring to.

But actually, I think you're onto something. Reston could in fact be an as-yet undiscovered Dharma Initiative station. Let's see, they already have the Swan, the Pearl, the Flame...so in light of streambed restoration maybe Reston is actually the Mulch Pile Station?

    Namaste!

  13. I would add EAT to "LIVE WORK PLAY GET INVOLVED ...". We need to promote to people who like to eat. Look at all the new eateries going up in Lake Anne.

  14. Well, at least the new nature center is pretty cool. Great place to take little kids.
