Happy Holidays! Soapstone 7-11 Robbed, As Usual

With the passing of the seasons, one thing remains a constant: the Reston 7-11 on Soapstone Drive was robbed... again.

An armed man entered the 7-Eleven store located at 2303 Soapstone Drive on Monday, December 28 around 3:30 a.m. and robbed two employees. The suspect displayed a gun, demanded money and fled with an unknown amount of cash and other property. There were no injuries.

The suspect was described as black, about 6 feet tall and approximately 250 pounds, with black hair. He was wearing a black hat, black pants, and a green jacket. He had a gray cloth covering his face.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477, e-mail at www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES/274637 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

Same old, same old. Talk about a case of the post-holiday blahs.

    Gulag: it's the new Anacostia.

  3. Thank you Cathy. That strip mall needs to be imploded.

  4. Actually, keep the 7-11, as is. Criminals like the "easy" places to rob which maybe will keep them out of my neighborhood.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Keep it? Man, we need bulldozers to get rid of it. Too bad RA didn't have a little "accident" while doing the stream restoration.

Do we start a pool on where the guy was from? I'm betting Alexandria. Them Alexandrians love to come to the Gulag and commit there serious crimes.

  7. The 7-11 is standalone. I think it may have a dry cleaners next door.

We should get more activity of this type when the GULAG succeeds in replacing the park-and-ride near Fox Mill with a high-rise section 8 apartment.

  8. Maybe we can borrow some of those WSSI bulldozers now doing streambed restoration east of Soapstone to "accidentally" knock down our 7-11 ghetto strip mall? And then use that area as additional parking for the overflow of vehicles that now park on Soapstone?

By the way, a survey crew was out today near that ghetto strip mall -- maybe the sidewalks along Soapstone are actually going to be built?

  9. Agreed, something needs to be done about that shopping center (there is also a dry cleaners and a domino's pizza). I live off of soapstone and drive by there almost daily, and there are crowds of teenagers wandering in the middle of the street about half the time I drive by. I can't tell you the number of times I've almost hit someone walking in the middle of the road at night across from that shopping center.

I'm also not terribly impressed with the kindercare across the street, which allows the kids to stand out front and throw rocks at cars while they drive by.

  10. There also is a tasty Chinese restaurant in that strip mall.

Re Anon 1:28pm: I've lived in the area for 2 and a half years and have been on Soapstone almost daily. I also have seen groups of people crossing near the 7-11 but have never seen children standing and throwing rocks from the kindercare.

What I have seen is a schoolbus stopping at the entrance to one of the condo/apt communities to pick up what seemed like 200 children. It's very annoying to get stuck there waiting for the bus to load or unload.

  11. The only business there that gets robbed is the 7-11. And it is at some crazy hour in the a.m. Perhaps they have security issues which is why they are continually a target. Crime is everywhere, if there is opportunity.

I live closer to South Lakes Shopping Center, which has a Crest Cleaners, but prefer to do business at the cleaners on Soapstone (Reston Cleaners). I just don't go there at 2 am.

  12. FCPD used to run a regular speed trap from the 7-11 parking lot. Haven't seen it in years. It's a natural cherry spot for speeding tickets. Fairly steep downhill. You pick up MPH without noticing. So why do I never see a patrol car in the 7-11 parking lot?

I say keep the 7-11, flatten Shadoweed instead.

Why is it that when we talk about new Section 8 housing, nobody talks North of the Border? The park area around the Home Despot would be ideal for a new housing project because of the easy access to transportation, a supermarket, shops, (and the attendant retail jobs) and medical care, not to mention those two fine elementary schools. Maybe we should start a petition to bring the love to North Reston?

Ah, but what the heck. We've already got so many units here in the Gulag, what's a couple hundred more? We can always put more mayo in the tuna salad and nobody will know the difference, I suppose.

Re Anon 11:50's comments about replacing the Fox Mill park & ride with Section 8 housing: unless there is some breaking news development that has escaped me, this is a dead issue. Circa 2005 an idea was floated to turn this park & ride into a massive apartment building development that would be all market rate rental units, but with a certain percentage set aside for "workforce housing", however that would be defined.

Cathy Hudgins called a public meeting to get local reaction. Did she ever. I think she was stunned by the turnout of more than 300 people, exactly ONE of whom supported this concept. This wasn't just Reston residents showing up; a lot of people also came from Herndon and Oakton. Opposition to the proposal was loud and furious. Hudgins refused to tell the audience what her position on this idea was (surprise!), but ultimately she came out against it, since she could clearly see which way the political winds were blowing. As far as I know, the idea has not pulled a Lazarus and risen from the dead.

Convict's comments about putting Section 8 housing north of the Toll Road brings to mind an interesting moment from that 2005 meeting. One woman in the audience stood up and recounted how former Fairfax County supervisor Martha Pennino, "Mother Fairfax", would always say that low-income housing should be in Reston and not Vienna, where Pennino had served three terms on the Vienna town council.

"Mother Fairfax is dead," the woman in the audience said. "You can put the low income housing in Vienna now."

  16. I have had rocks thrown at my car by kids at that spot, but they were big kids, not nursery school age. I stopped the car, backed up, and spoke to the children.

  20. Another failure -- and sure to get worse -- thanks to cathy hudgins and her "sidewalk" to and from hell.

And, right across the street from a nursery school---so much for safety!

Tear this one down as soon as a test of how to get rid of Lake Anne!!

  21. Why do you think 299 people spoke against yet MORE Section 8 housing in Reston?

There is TOO MUCH of it here. Send it to Great Falls, McLean, Vienna, the so-called "Alexandria Section" of Fairfax County. Reston has paid its dues and needs no more to be the dumping ground for low-income housing.

And let's not forget what a disaster Stonegate was before the county took it over and stuffed the wildly underused multi-million dollar Southgate rec center there.

Even today one can drive up and down Glade Drive between Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley --- it's not pretty...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shadowood is not the problem --- it's the moron who is the county supervisor who decided to leave the ghetto parking lot on the Shadowood side there and pave the OPPOSITE side of the street.

You never see any of those horrendous heaps parked on Shadowood lots any time of the day or night and they have the most efficient towing company on Earth. I live in Ivy Bush and I see the tow truck in there every day most always hauling out cars.

Once again, we have our do nothing cathy hudgins to thank for the ever more ugly Reston.

Just remember --- VOTE FOR CHANGE!!!

Go stuff your self with Macaroni Grill all-you-care-to-eat soup and salad.

We should tear down your home and send you out of town on a rail, tarred and feathered.

  24. Meanwhile, back on the original subject of crime...here in our cul de sac near Lawyers Road, one of our neighbors has infomred us that his cars were broken into three nights ago and money taken from them. Unclear if the cars were in the garage or not, but in any event when he reported the crime, the police told him that such larcenies are increasing. So I guess the moral of the story is to make yourself a hardened target so that the perps will look for someplace easier.

  25. HCKD:

    Shame on you!

You are rude, arrogant and the poster child for exactly what is wrong with Reston and it's intolerant rigid and inflexible ignorant communist liberals.

Go live as you like in your hideous commune called "Lake Anne" but you keep your cotton-picken hands out of MY pockets and don't you DARE demand one more penny of public money to defend your ugly, failed "living" experiment.

I'd gladly buy you dinner at Mac Grill, where we dine often, but hopefully you have been banned from the premises for your defamatory remaks and that will spare the rest of us your hate and intolerance.

As to my house, it's falling apart quite well all by itself thanks to the dysfunctional RA and it's even more dysfunctional DRB by the inferior materials they insist it be constructed and maintained.

Hey, 12;44. If you don't like the standards imposed by Reston, why don't you buy an SFH on Alabama Drive in Herndon? If you want to put vinyl siding on your home instead of the original metal or repaint your house pink or even put up a shine to Santa Maria in your front yard, you can do so.

What Crack are you smoking? "Don't DARE?" Or what?

It hardly surprises me at all to learn that you patronize Macaroni Grill, and It amuses me to know end to think of you stuffing your fat face with a never-ending bowl of pasta.

And I echo 8:46's sentiments. YOu read and signed the covenant when you moved here. So you only have yourself to blame. Sell-out and move away. The beauty of it is you could go nearly anywhere and your favorite restaurant will be close at hand with a never-ending bowl of pasta for you to stuff your stupid fat face with.

  29. Easy solution: go back to original 7-11 hrs. why are they open at 3:30am...?

  30. Install cameras at the entrances to Shadowood, Winterthur, and the others.

  31. One would think Lake Anne would be a great location for a 7-11. Put one next to the three-way stop in front of the plaza. People could pick up their donuts, coffee, and USA Today on their way out of Reston and never have to bother with going into the plaza..

    ReplyDelete
  32. HCKD:

What do Macaroni Grill, pasta and what people eat have to do with anything?

Are you that petty that you mind the business of everyone else? And what they eat? That is insane!

Heavens --- build a bridge and get over it!

Put another way, grow up and get a life!
