Forget the Tour De France: The Real Action is at the Reston Town Center

It's not quite as exciting as the awesome elevator rides, but here's a bit of "action" from the recent bike race at Reston Town Center. It's kind of like going to a Nascar race, only with more upscale retail opportunities and more creative use of slow-motion replays:

And no, there's no truth to the rumor that this wreck actually happened on the newly resurfaced Lawyers Road cyclodrome.

  1. If you possibly can avoid Lawyers Road right now, whether on foot, on bike or in car, do so. It's a nightmare. Not that the resurfacing has stopped a few bicyclists I've seen. Talk about a deathwish. Sheesh, when they get their own lanes they'll probably start boycotting the stretch!

  2. Those of us who live near the stretch of Lawyers east of Soapstone were given a special treat by VDOT on Monday night. They actually began paving the (soon to be only) eastbound stretch of the road around 10:30 p.m. and didn't finish until after 12:30 in the morning. So those of us who have to get up early to go to work to pay our taxes had to listen to the roar of diesel engines, the slamming of dump truck tailgates, and the warning beeps of trucks reversing well into the wee hours of the morning -- not to mention having the whole house literally shaking from the steamrollers. Thank you, VDOT, for this display of common sense and common courtesy.

If you watch the video, you'll notice that the dude who crashes first and starts the chain reaction was originally by the curb and slid nearly the entire way across two lanes of the street. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how this scenario would end if it happened on Lawyers Road. And since the Anorexia Alliance loves to go cycling full speed in the PM rush hour all over South Reston on Tuesdays, I don't get a good feeling about what's going to happen one day on the future bike lanes there.
