I go to Safeway on Baron Cameron on Sunday nights after 10 p.m. and imagine what it's like to be the last person on Earth in a grocery store. Except that I have to pay when it's all over. That experience, for me, was superior to that of the Whole Foods, where I felt like a fake hippie, VW-driving, corporate progressive living in some nearby Reston tower or other. Which was only slightly better than feeling like I was in a third-world country where buckets of tofu, enough saki to make a Wolftrap concert interesting, and animal torture were the norm. RIP Fresh World.

This is why I shop at the Northpoint Giant. I had a rather rude cashier who could barely speak English this past Sunday while doing my shopping, but generally I've always been happy there---and I reward stores that provide me a pleasant shopping experience with more of my hard-earned dollars (not to mention I've already saved over $100 in six months with my bonus card, and I usually only spend $50/week on groceries). When I first moved to Reston I had a very unpleasant experience at the Spectrum Center Harris Teeter within walking distance of my apartment. The result? I've never been back.

At my age, a competent pharmicist is an important factor. So we stay with Hunters Woods for the drugs. Never mind the gang-bangers and panhandlers.

On another note, I am used to at least one speed trap per day on my 6-mile Reston/Herndon commute. But now I am into my 3rd day in a row without being radar'ed or lidar'ed. Where are our boys in blue?

Yeah, that safeway is so bad I don't go there anymore at all. I have to wait in a huge line even at 10 in the morning on a wednesday, because they will only have one register working. I'll try to make a quick run with the kids in the morning and it will still end up taking almost an hour because I have to spend 20 minutes waiting to get out. The safeway at south lakes is smaller but seems not to have this problem.

All the local grocery stores have something to learn from trader joe's, which is the most efficient place I've seen for getting people checked out.

Your schedule permitting, never go shopping at the Hunter Woods Safeway between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. weekdays. Most of the cashiers are competent, and also pretty nice, but there are one or two to avoid at all cost if you can help it because they make molasses look turbocharged by comparison. I actually think the store management is primarily at fault for not having enough staff present when needed.
